Amid a surge in flu cases, two hospitals are implementing a face mask mandate. Salisbury District and Great Western Hospitals in Wiltshire are urging all patients, visitors, and staff in their A&E departments and various assessment units to wear face coverings. The Great Western Hospital reports a 63% increase in flu hospitalizations over the past week, with further rises anticipated. NHS data reveals an average of 1,700 flu patients in English hospitals last week, a 50% increase from the previous year. Health experts caution that a more severe strain of the virus is circulating this year. While the hospitals specifically requested mask-wearing in A&E and assessment areas, they also strongly recommended face coverings in other clinical zones. Salisbury District Hospital characterized the measure as a temporary, risk-based precaution to safeguard patients, staff, and services. The hospital also advised visitors to wash their hands regularly and avoid hospital visits if unwell. Luisa Goddard, chief nurse at Great Western Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust, emphasized the importance of flu vaccination. She stated, 'Flu is not just a bad cold. It can cause serious illness, and every winter, we witness the strain it places on our patients and services. Protecting ourselves and each other through flu vaccination is crucial.'
